When buying lawn mower tires, there are a number of different factors to consider…
Original Equipment (OEM) or Previous Tire on Machine
For many of you, you may be quite happy with the way that the original tire that came on your mower (or OEM) performed. In a situation like this, you may want to simply replace the old tire with the same product.
On the other hand, if you are hoping to save money or find a better replacement option, then you may need to investigate to find the right choice to meet your needs. This is particularly true if the previous tire did not meet your expectations in terms of performance or longevity. Other tread designs or ply ratings may help your equipment operate more efficiently or suit your application or work environment better. Often times you can save some money with a import brand that is very good quality but at a lower price than the OEM. This is why we carry the best lawn mower tire brands available- to offer you choices- like good, better and best options.
There are three major factors that everyone should consider before you make a purchase: Tire size, ply rating and tread design.
You can find your tire size on the side wall of the tire(see photo). It is very important to start with the correct size to ensure proper fitment and safety. Keep in mind not all sizes in various brands will be the same exact size so be sure to check the tire specs or give us a call if you are switching from one brand to another. Ken Jones stocks the best selection of mower tire sizes available- even hard to find sizes!
The ply rating of a tire determines the operating load of the machine. Tires that have a higher ply rating have the capability of carrying higher loads. You can also find this on the sidewall of the tire (see photo). Lawn mower tires are typically in two, four, six, and eight plys.
Tread design is very important for buying any speciality tire, but is particularly important for mower and turf tires. There is a wide range of varying tread design patterns currently available, and they are specifically designed to meet all of your traction needs. Traction and surface (work environment) will be the biggest considerations when choosing the right tread. If you plan to operate your machinery on sloped terrains, you will require more traction, and an aggressive tread design is your best option.
For the most part, machines owned by home owners typically come with less aggressive, standard tires. Commercial machines owned by landscapers often need tread design that provides better traction, a heavier ply rating and longer tread life. To get the best selection of tread designs available you should always buy from a speciality tire dealer that carries many different brands and tread styles.
Flat Free Options
Flat Free Tires are also available for front tires of many commercial mowers including top brand commercial walk behind and zero turn riding mowers. Flat proof tires can save you time, money and headaches from costly downtime from a flat. Flatproofing products such as sealants and foam fill are also available for most lawn & garden tires.
